Osmoses: where the world’s smallest molecules meet the biggest opportunities in the energy transition

Osmoses, a cleantech company founded in 2021, is transforming the way molecular gas separations are performed, with a mission to decarbonize industrial processes by eliminating energy waste and rebuilding century-old infrastructure. Gas separations are crucial in the chemical, petrochemical, and energy industries, consuming 15% of global energy and contributing significantly to carbon emissions. Traditional separation methods are either insufficiently selective, energy-intensive, or performance-limited, underscoring the need for innovative solutions. Osmoses addresses this challenge with high-performance, energy-efficient membranes that can be applied to a wide range of high-value applications, including hydrogen recovery, oxygen production, helium extraction, renewable natural gas production, and refrigerant recycling.

The foundation of Osmoses' technology is a breakthrough innovation in polymer science, developed by co-founders at MIT and Stanford University, and detailed in a 2022 article in the journal Science. This polymer offers the best-known separation performance of any polymer membrane material discovered to date. The resulting efficiency gains can lead to decarbonization of existing processes, recovery of valuable gases currently burned, and purification of gases typically too diluted for use—all with lower cost, energy consumption, and a smaller physical footprint compared to traditional processes.

Over the past 12-18 months, Osmoses has celebrated several key inflection points:

Closed $11M Seed round in Fall 2023

● Added in-house manufacturing capabilities

● Advanced prototyping and testing

● Developed our value proposition and strengthened relationships with commercial partners

● Expanded leadership team with key hires: Robert Bory as Chief Commercial Officer, Ed Sanders as Head of Corporate Development, and Swapan Rahman as Director of Product Development

Osmoses' journey was supported by everyone who believed in its vision and the unique ecosystem surrounding it. Massachusetts can and should be a place where the best ideas are born and built, and it is where amazing programs like “The Eddies” empower young organizations to flourish and make an impact on the environment and communities. This mentorship program catalyzed Osmoses’ growth, supporting the team in sharpening the focus on the company’s vision and business model, and amplifying their visibility and network. The Eddies program made a difference in bringing Osmoses closer to commercialization by providing exposure to experienced judges and successful innovators who evaluated the team’s innovation and potential to affect positive change, and offered strategic feedback to reinforce the vision and its communication to stakeholders.
